Thailand map showing "B" Roads

South Thailand 2008

Hi,

When I was cycling from Bangkok to Krabi a few years ago, I looked desperately and unsuccessfully in any book shops along the way for road maps that would show the secondary roads. It was only in the airport upon leaving that I happened across a good one, but unfortunately I didn't buy it and have since forgotten who makes it.

As I will be back again this summer (first NE Thailand and later in the south) I would appreciate if you could offer any recommendations.

Cheers,
Pete

Maps for Thailand
by: Bob

I've done some touring in Thailand and so far the two best that I have found are the PN Atlas and Think Net Maps.

The PN Atlas is covers the whole country and does show smaller roads even many dirt ones.

The Think Net maps also have good detail, although I'm not sure if it is good as PN's. It does however show some gas stations and resorts and hotel, not all however. Think Net also produces an Atlas, its huge however and is kind of heavy. It does however have maps of about 130 different cities around the country and the maps show hotels and other places of interest.

Both of these can be found in Book stores, if you are in Bangkok they can easily be found, and even up country you should not have a problem finding them.

Google maps versus Nelles
by: Peter

Yes Pete, I fully agree with you. For China I usually recommend the local produced provincial maps but Thailand doesn't seem to have those.

I am atm in Java, with a Nelles map with the same inaccurate problems. Unfortunately there seems to be no better alternative in print so I use Google maps too.

Nelles
by: Pete

We were using the Nelles maps on our previous trip and found it wanting. Often we found ourselves on a high traffic road wanting to find an alternate route.

With the Nelles map resolution, we weren't able to determine if a given road would actually lead somewhere or only double back (as so often happened) to the high traffic road.

I've since checked google maps and it appears to have the better resolution, so this time I think I'll try with the iPhone navigator to see if it'll work for me.

bicycling south thailand
by: Peter

I've never found any decent general map of Thailand better then the Nelles. That said, in Chiang Mai I got a good map of the Chiang Mai area and in Krabi I found a map of a part of south Thailand in Ao Nang, a piece of it I scanned for my soutb Thailand page but other then that I haven't see any.

There are some decent more local maps of for example Bagnkok around Khao San Road available and it is there where you have the best change to find more maps.
