Inspiring story

by William Davies
(Phillipines)

My name is William, and this really isn't much of a story. I have just read the story of the one arm, one legged cyclist, and was very moved by his insight to change a negative into a positive, and to inspire able bodied people like myself.

I too am a cyclist of touring, an instructor in outdoor education. Over the past 20 years I have overcome a few physical difficulties; paralysis of my legs, choking on a drink(CPR)brought me alive again, a climbing accident (22 months recovery 5 surgeries) and lately a heart attack. However, two things are difficult to overcome, 1, constant battle with alcohol; 2,Believing in myself.

Re-reading the story again, has inspired me, like a pray I`d forgotten and remembered. The saying `Everything is possible, if you want it`, how true this is, we as humans find it only too easy to use excuses not to do something, I`m not excused from that comment.

Taking one day at a time, helping those less fortunate than me, is now such a powerful way to cycle and have fun in life again. I hope this will inspire others as it has me.
Peace Wil

what a beautiful thought
by: Nazlina

Hi Wiliam,

I think you are doing great by writing about how you feel after reading the story.. yesterday I came across someone who wrote to me commenting about my cycling adventure and turned out he has a 12 year old son who is in a coma.. terminal.. and no hope of recovery. Made me so thankful with what I have now. I value my children so much more now.. every minute counts.

You can do anything...if you want it
by: Peter

Great to hear you too find it inspiring. To me, he was one of the great teachers I ever met. The main lesson: Nothing is impossible. There's plenty of examples of people with no arm, no legs, or both to be found, but I met this guy several times. That made it twice as powerful.

To me it's now: No one can say anymore: I can not... you can say I do not want, but you always CAN. In August I will see if I can make a few fresh photos of him and his little shop in Yangshuo. He's also a gifted painter.
