Hostels and hotels in Hanoi

Hanoi has surprisingly moderated priced hotels. The hotels in Hanoi are to be found all over the city but most travelers prefer to stay in the Hoan Kiem Lake area where most of the attractions are to be found. It is also the most atmospheric area in Hanoi. Here is a selection of good hotels in Hanoi. We'll check some low budget hostels, followed by some mid range hotels,

Hanoi - Saigon on bicycle

This is the tour you see everything there is to see in Vietnam. And it takes only 10 days.

Low Budget Hostels

Low budget Hostels

Splendid Star 2 Hotel

Spendid Star 2 Hotel HanoiThe Splendid Star 2 Hotel gets many praises (it's a 3 star hotel). Not surprising, it is located near the center of the Old Quarter, with only a 5 minute walk to Hoan Kiem Lake.

It might not be the cheapest of the low budget hostels, but it is certainly one of the best at the low end in Hanoi. It is probably better for couples and families then for lone backpackers but it's a good value.

Super clean rooms, friendly staff and a nice restaurant, if you have the money to burn, this should be your choice.

Rooms go from US $22 to $45, probably the best deal you can get in Hanoi.

Garnet hotel

Much cheaper is the Garnet Hotel. Located in the Ho Kiem district, this is a good choice if you like cheap and quiet. The staff is very helpful and speak good English. With clean and spacious rooms, you can't go wrong with the Garnet Hotel. There is warm water and plenty of towels available. Despite located in the busy area, the rooms are quiet. A very good deal for US $10!

Kangaroo Hotel

Kangaroo Hotel HanoiThis is a good place if you are looking for dirt cheap and do not care too much for comfort. With shops, restaurants and nightmarket nearby you get whatever you need. Rooms go for US $6 to US $12. Staff is friendly, helpful and speaks English.

It is a little walk to Ho Kiem lake though. Still... good deal for the price.

Mid range hotels

Melia Hotel HanoiMelia Hotel Hanoi

The Melia Hotel Hanoi is located south of the Hoan Kiem Lake within walking distance from the lake, St. Jospeh Cathedral, Temple of Literature, the railway station and other attractions.

It is a huge hotel with space for 1200 guests. From the hotel's 21 storeys, guests can enjoy views over the beautiful city of Hanoi.

One traveler wrote: "We stayed in an executive suite. We would have had great views across Hanoi, but for the weather. Accommodation was excellent as was the nightly complimentary snacks and drinks in the executive lounge. Service was very attentive and helpful. We would stay again."

Nikko HotelNikko Hotel Hanoi

The Nikko Hotel Hanoi is located just south of the railway station near Thien Quang Lake. It is a convenient location, just at the city centers border with the Hoan Kien Lake still in walking distance. From the moment you enter the hotel's lobby, you will be surrounded by Vietnamese charm and traditional Japanese hospitality.

The hotel has three fine restaurants and bar lounge, a swimming pool, sauna and other facilities. It's a 5 star choice, no doubt.

Heritage Hotel HanoiHeritage Hotel Hanoi

The Heritage Hotel Hanoi is a decent economy hotel in the western part of the city near the US Embassy and the Giang Vo Exhibition Centre. Ho Chi Minh's mausoleum is within walking distance too.

Although taxis and tricycles are plenty available it is still quite a long way to the Hoan Kiem lake and other attractions. However for the quality of the hotel, it is very decent priced with big rooms and good quality service.

Queen 2 Hotel HanoiQueen Hotel Hanoi

The much cheaer priced Queen Hotel Hanoi is better located the the Heritage Hotel. For a hotel in this price range, you get a good value. Rooms start around US $15 (I stayed here once and I thought it was an excellent deal).

One traveler says: "The hotel is located in a great location, within walking distance to all major attractions in Hanoi. The staff is super friendly and the hotel is mostly clean, but it's nothing special; it was the cheapest hotel that I stayed at on my southeast Asia trip, and I would say that it was money well spent."

Camellia Hotel, Hanoi

The Camellia Hotel, Hanoi too is very conveniently located. Main problem with hotels in this area can be the street noise. However, the Hom Market is a three-minute walk from the hotel and the Thong Nhat Park is five minutes away. It is an excellent location with plenty of restaurants  and shops in the area too.

Hanoi Elegance HotelHanoi Elegance 1 Hotel

The Hanoi Elegance Hotel is another good deal in the Hoan Kiem Lake district. The hotel is located near the Water Puppet Theatre and a great base to explore the old French Quarter.

One traveler comments: "Price and location of hotel were excellent. My wife and I walked everywhere. The hotel staff were exceptional, friendly and nothing was a problem.

My wife particularly raved about the cleanliness of the hotel. We have travelled to many countries and stayed in budget and 6 star resorts and the Elegance 2 Hotel Hanoi is up there with the 6 star rating; we would definitely stay here again."

What else is there then to ad? Nothing.

Hanoi Paradise Hotel

Hanoi Paradise HotelThe  Hanoi Paradise 1 Hotel is a 3 star hotel in the Hoan Kiem Lake district near the Old City Gate, the Dong Xuan Market and Walking Street Hang Ngang. With 35 luxury and standard rooms with exquisite European decoration an architecture this is a hotel that perfectly fits in the old French Quarter.

"The room is great, new, equipped with FOC Internet PC and spacious bathroom. Hotel staff - all are helpful & friendly."

Hanoi Plaza Hotel HanoiHanoi Plaza Hotel

The Hanoi Plaza Hotel Hanoi is a relatively new hotel in the Hoan Kiem Lake district. As it is with old buildings, the rooms and corridors are a bit small.

Rooms overlooking the street are the best option to stay here. Roomy, clean. A/C works great. The staff's English is someone what limited but they make an effort to please. It might not be the best hotel to choose from, it is a great choice in this part of the city.

Hong Ngoc 1 Hotel Hanoi

Hong Ngoc 1The Hong Ngoc 1 Hotel Hanoi gets thumbs up from many travelers:

"Hong Ngoc 1 certainly met our needs. The staff were extremely friendly and couldn't do enough for us. The rooms were spacious and pleasantly decorated. The hotel looked after our luggage while we visited Sapa and Halong Bay.

Upon return the hotel allowed us to shower before a flight home free of charge. The breakfasts were quite ordinary but adequate. As hotels were booked out due to the typhoon, Hong Ngoc 1 managed to find us a room at very late notice. We would most probably stay there again."

The hotel houses a restaurant and coffee house with a wide variety of Asian, European and Vietnamese cuisine. Even though there are plenty of restaurants in the area, it's worth eating here.
