The Traveling Cyclist’s Guide To Free Lodging

Who wouldn't want free hotel rooms! Crazy? A Scam? No way. The system, strange enough maybe, it works!

The Ultimate Guide To Free Lodging

Phnom Penh

Hang Pech Guest House

Hang Pech Guest House in Phnom PenhThe Hang Pech Guest House is located at Street 310 which is near the infamous Tuol Sleng.

I've stayed here some years ago and found it an excellent and cheap place (especially if you look what you get!).

It is actually more a hotel then a backpackers guesthouse or hostel but it is certainly cheap, clean and comfortable with a nice and helpful staff.

Rory's Pub and Guesthouse

Rory's Pub and GuesthouseRory's Pub and Guesthouse is located directly opposite the National Museum, and close to the riverfront for nightlife.

It is a small cozy guesthouse with a friendly bar downstairs. The restaurant serves both Western and Asian food.

Rooms range in price from a single room for $11 to a double room with balcony facing the Palace for $30 all with free WIFI, a/c, en-suite & Cable TV.

Sakura hotel

Sakura Hotel Phnom PenhSakura hotel is our second of the guesthouses in Cambodia we want to recommend.

The Sakura Hotel has 70 rooms and a small restaurant that offers breakfasts and some Finnish/Khmer meals.

There are safety boxes, free internet at lobby and free wi-fi in rooms and a laundry service.

The hotel is located in the heart of Phnom Penh city on road 242 near the Grand Royal Palace in a very safe area.

Spring Guesthouse

Spring Guesthouse Phnom PenhSpring Guesthouse is one of the cheapest guesthouses in Cambodia, if not in Phnom Penh alone. Although it's basic and you get what you pay for, it a very decent place to stay.

The location is a little bit away from the riverfront but there are always tuk-tuk/moto drivers outside the guesthouse waiting to take you for about $2.

All rooms are the same size and have a bathroom, a window and a TV with 60 cable channels. Room prices vary depending on whether you choose fan or air-con, and hot or cold water.

The hotel offers:

  • Single/Double Room with Fan : US $5.00
  • Single/Double Room with Fan and Hot shower : US $ 8.00
  • Single/Double Room with Air-con and Hot shower : US $12.00
  • Twin Room with Fan : US $ 5.00
  • Twin Room with fan and Hot shower : US $ 8.00
  • Twin Room with Air-con and Hot shower :US $ 12.00

Encounters

Encounters is another option in Phnom Penh. It's located in 108 Street, nicely central. It's a very basic guesthouse but the atmosphere is good and the staff is helpful.

It's a popular place for backpackers and the breakfast highly praised. There are dorms only, and some have no doors.

Sihanoukville

Mick and Craigs Guest House

Mick and Craigs Guest House Mick and Craigs Guest House gets thumbs up from travelers:

"The room was beautiful and spotlessly clean. maid service was daily and they gave us 2 bottles of water, nice touch. heather spent time talking to the staff about various things and they were so nice and helpful. we would stay there again. excellent location, good food", one traveler explains.

This western run 17 room guesthouse is located just behind Serendipity beach, which is next to the Golden Lions traffic circle. The tourist spots of Sihanoukville are all nearby but far enough to keep it all quiet.

This is one of the few budget guesthouses in Sihanoukville that offers quality rooms and attentive service for cheap backpacker prices. This is certainly a very good choice which is why we recommend it.

Garden Hill Hotel & Resort

Garden Hill Hotel & Resort SihanoukvilleThe Garden Hill Hotel & Resort in Sihanoukville has 110 rooms near the Gulf of Thailand.

Although the price is very good for the quality offered, travelers might find it a bit far from other areas in town. The hotels' facilities include a swimming pool, tennis courts, fitness center, and jogging track, all with views of the sea.
