Cycling Selangor to Penang

by Jason
(Malaysia)

I'm Janson and I'm a regular cyclist, I take bike rides to work and my bicycle was the only transport mode I had for getting to school during my schooling years. I'm not an extreme cyclist but I enjoy cycling a lot.

You have a very great site, the articles are all very detailed in providing information and I really like that. Very personal touch to the site and there's really a lot knowledge to be taken in from this site.

I have a question, Peter. I'm planning to take a bike trip alone and was just looking online for some info regarding cycling in Malaysia as the furthest I've cycled is only around an hour or so from one city to another. I've always dreamt of cycling from maybe Selangor to Penang or from here down south.

Just wondering if I'm dreaming too big or is that possible for one month? And I need some advise from your vast experiences regarding cycling on the roads. I'm worried about accomodation and the amount of stuff I should bring along. I also need to know what equipment I will require to be on such journey.

I will do some more research on that matter myself and also on this site. I will be expecting a reply from you if that's alright? Sorry to have posted so many questions in one form but I'd love to hear what you have to add to this.

With regards and thanks in advance,

I agree with Peter

Yes,

it can be done like Peter said.

My son Johan cycled 84 km in one day.. when he was only 8 years old on a kid's normal bike.

It is just the mind set.. you would be surprised how much you can achieve.

Do not worry about lodging, you will find a lot of options along the road. I myself have a dream of cycling the road from Kota Bharu to Kuantan, and stop to enjoy the beaches of the East Coast.

Try it, I am sure you would have a lot of fun and learn a thing or two along the way.

Selangor-Penang

Hi Jason

Only an hour day cycling? I tell you this... if you have a reasonable good bike, and you are in reasonable physical condition (ie, not 150kg, under whiskey and dope, etc..), you will be able to cycle at least 50km a day in 3 hours.

Have you read Johans bike ride?

Johan cycled Pangkor - Penang in 4 days on his kid bike.

I can promise you, Selangor - Penang would be possible for you to do in a week, riding your bike over a whole day for about 4 hours MAX. And I am not exaggerating. That is of course, if you cycle roughly in a straight line. Here's a nice schedule:

Selangor - Teluk Intan
Teluk Intan - Sitiawan/Lumut/Pangkor
Sitiawan/Lumut/Pangkor - Pantai Remis
Pantai Remis - Taiping (Lumut-Taiping = 95km, still good to do in a day though)
Taiping-Selama (which is much nicer then the trunk road Bagan Serai - Parit Buntar)
Selama - Kulim
Kulim - Penang.

Places mentioned here all have accommodation, Selama is probably the one you have ask because the Homestay seems not always be open. .

Road condition: all excellent.
Selangor - Teluk Intan - not too nice, mostly a big 4 way lane but all flat.
Teluk Intan - Sitiawan/Lumut - nice depending on the daytime quiet and flat road.
Lumut-Taiping
Hills: Around Segari some slight hills, never longer then 500 meters and never steep except the 3rd bridge just out of Lumut.
A few short hills after Trong before Taiping, hardly worth mentioning, the bridge over the highway is more difficult)
On the way from Taiping to Selema, some slight hills. (distance - 48km, 3 hours cycling to the max)
Selama - Kulim - I would advice to take the road to Mahang when cycling out of Selema. A few km on this road there's a junction to Kulim. This is the easiest road with one short sharp hill (about 400 meter).

Kulim - Penang: strange enough I recommend cycling to Lunas and follow the motorway, there's a separate motorbike lane but it has some short climbs. Alternative you can take the old road from Kulim to BM which is 2 lanes and busy but flat. I don't like this one though.

Trust me, it IS easy and it IS a lot of fun. Should you do this journey, give me a call, if I am home, let's have a chat. Cycling should be fun, not a burden. And if you calculate a whole day from A to B, you can easily do this journey this way.

Regards

Peter
