cycling in sichuan and yunnan

hi!

My name is Ori Gur and im planning a bicycle journey from Chengdu to the south border with Laos through Yunnan.
i have a lot of questions about biking in china.
is it possible to buy there good bikes (i mean good by western standard)?

Is it possible not planning a specific route,but being spontaneous and plane just few days ahead?
Also, can i make camping on the roads? Is it common to sleep in camping but not in camping sites?
Am i supposed to have a problem to find good spot for camping?
and many more...

bicycling Chengdu to Kunming and Laos

Hello

Chengdu has a couple of decent bike shops. If you have to buy a bike there, I suggest you also buy some basic tools as Chinese cheap bikes have the tendency to loosen up. See the Chengdu page. Some of those shops have excellent bikes. It will be harder to find panniers though.

Camping is possible in China. However, as almost every piece of land in China, and therefore in this part of China too, it might be hard to find a place to camp undisturbed.

I camped once out, the first stage on the way from Zhaotong to Kunming. But China does not have any official camping sites. And hotels outside the tourist areas can be very cheap.
