cycling from Denpassar to Solo

(Hong Kong)

Hello, We are due to start a three week cycle trip from Denpassar to Solo at the end of June. We are going to be on hybrids and this is our first long distance bike trip. I have read your experiences and they have been really helpful (in fact they helped us make the decision to do this trip). We are thinking of doing the East and North of Bali and then onwards to Java. I was wondering if you could give us a little more info on roads, places that we really should go to and anything to watch out for. Also we will be flying with our bikes and was thinking of getting a cardboard carrying box here, leaving it in Denpassar and then getting another in Solo for the return journey, what do you think? I want to make sure the bikes are in one piece when we arrive. Also could you recommend a good place to stay in Denpassar for our first night, that will allow for easy access to the East coast.
Thank-you so much for your help
Best wishes and happy cycling
Jo

cycling bali and java

I just finished this very trip in April 2010. Start in Ubud, cycled up to Mt Batur, 30km climbing... and then another few km to the junction for going to Singaraja. Road condition is excellent.

Northern roads are fine too, plenty of places to stay in Lovina and some in Seririt. After that you have to make it in a day (easy as it is almost all flat) Gilimanuk. I think it's nicer to stay on the other site: Banywangi has some hotels but there's some in Ketapang (landing of the ferry) too. This is especially good if you decide to follow the road I cycled. You can read what I did: http://www.bicycle-adventures.com/cycling-in-java.html last month. I think it's worth to do and the traffic is almost everywhere except some big cities very easy and quiet.

For a box, check my page about bike shop in Solo http://www.bicycle-adventures.com/surakarta-bike-shop.html They have them.

I have no recommendation for a hotel/guesthouse in Denpasar but you might find it easy to find one in Kuta beach area which is minutes from the airport.
