cycling down china

Am i the process of planning to cycle from beijing down to south east asia. Have found it hard to gauge the length of time this would take on the assumption that we cycled fairly leisurely. Also would like to know how realistic the route is, and where I could possibly find information in how to plan a route?
Any help would be much appreciated.

Cycling Beijing to south east asia

Hi James,

Planning a route is always difficult. Here are some things you need to look at:

- How long is journey going to take?
- Are you bringing your own bike?
- What is your intended end goal?
- Do you mind to travel certain areas by bus/train in case you get in time troubles?
- What are your interests? (art, culture? archeological sites? etc..

Let's say you want to cycle Beijing to Hong Kong, which is about 2000 as the birds fly. I can cycle 2000km in a month, it's about 70km average a day. However, it means you won't stay at many place longer then one night. Further, the distance Beijing - Hong Kong is more then 2000 as the road never go in a straight line and you certainly do want to avoid the busiest motorways.

Personally I would calculate at least 2 months to cover Beijing - Hong Kong. That said, you might want to skip certain areas. Some areas are nicer then others and you might want to spend more time there. For example, a week in Xi'an or Yangshuo is very easy spend.

So cycling Beijing to any place... what do you want? I've spend 2 years in China on bicycle and I have not seen any of the east coast. No time.

What is very easy in Asia, in this case China, is that you can always drop your bike on a bus or train, so you can earn time back.
