cycling around Bangkok

by Anthony
(UK)

Hi

I'm fed up with cold rain in u.k. I want to come to thai in nov/dec and cycle a bit of road racing if poss as I ride a trek1.2 road bike.

Can u recommend cycling places in/around Bangkok or do i have to go elsewhere?

Is there cycling clubs who do road racing training days near Bangkok?

Should i bring my own bike or rent?

Many thanks for your reply

good advice

That's a great advice, I will track them down when I am in Bangkok, but it can take a while. Maybe in December although Bali looks like another great place to cycle (it's been years since I have been there...)

Cycling fun in Bangkok
by: Alex

Hi guys,

have you ever heard of Recreational Bangkok Biking?
I recently did Bangkok Paradise tour. It was a full day boat and cycling. The cycling part was about 27 miles so you don't need to be really trained for it.
Check them out at www.bangkokbiking.com and perhaps you will join one of their cycling adventures.

Cheers,

Alex

bicycling Bangkok and around
by: Peter

Hi Anthony

Bangkok as a city is not a good place to cycle. However, there is an excellent bike shop near the Cambodian embassy: Pro-Bike. If you don't want to bring your own bike, this is the place to pick one up.

Where to cycle in Thailand then? Around Bangkok there are many places. Think of a short ride to Ayuthaya and the surrounding. You could cycle further north to Sukothai and Chiang Mai. The onging roads are in excellent condition. West of Bangkok you can find the River Kwai Bridge, worth a visit too. However, along Bangkok, the on going roads are busy and not much fun. Therefore I recommend some other places.

North east Thailand is mostly flat and less scenic. However, you could go to Nong Khai and do a nice couple of weeks in north Laos (much recommended, see my cycling
in laos
)

Another option is to go south. I would not recommend to cycle out of Bangkok going south. I've done that once and it wasn't much fun until I arrived in Cha'am. After that, it becomes nicer, more quiet and you are able to use some back roads.

South Thailand is a must see. If you don't want to waste time, get a train from Bangkok to Chumphon and start there your bike journey. You could first go to Ko TaoKo Tao and then by ferry to Kp Samui and Surat Thani and cycle from there to Krabi and even Hat Yai. See my
south Thailand

Personally I think the road from Surat Thani to Krabi and Phuket is worth the effort. It's nice, quiet, enough to see to keep you busy, accommodation available (cheap too).

Another thing to consider is that you have under normal circumstances only a month visa. So plan a little. If you go south, cross the border into Malaysia (you can even visit me). Or go to Cambodia (visa at the border in Aranyaprathet)

If you are in north Thailand, you can cross the Lao border (visa available) at Houy Xai. The road to Luang Nam Tha and further to Oudomxai is now2 in excellent condition.

Trust me, you can easily spend a couple of months in Thailand with trips to Laos, Cambodia and Malaysia.

Are there cycling clubs? Not that I know of.
