Costs of cycling in Europe

by Sam
(Australia)

I am 21 years of age and i am looking to to spend at least a few months cycling through europe as of the beginning of June 2010.

The trip is only in the very early stages of planning, but i was hoping for some more detailed advice. As it stands i was hoping to ride through both France and Italy, but considering the time i have availabel i was thinking of extending my travels. Any advice on where else to go?

Also in regard to the cost of you gear in total before leaving for a trip, how much am i looking at spending on a good bike, panny bags (i think thats what they are called), etc. This also involves camping equipment as i was planning to camp except for in the major cities. I take it camping is easily possible outside of major cities in europe?

Any other details would be much appreciated. I just need a base from which to truly start drawing a map, a time frame, a budget and get this off the ground.

Cheers mate, i really appreciate the help.

Hi Sam

You have a lot of questions which are already answered on the website, so I won't answer them here. I suggest you first read a few pages, amongst others:

http://www.bicycle-adventures.com/bicycle-choice.html
http://www.bicycle-adventures.com/planning-your-bicycle-adventure.html
http://www.bicycle-adventures.com/bicycle-maintenance.html
http://www.bicycle-adventures.com/bicycle-components.html

As for costs, it is really hard to talk about costs because it always depends on many different things. Which? You will stay in hotels or camp? Eat out or cook yourself? But put it this way, camping in Europe is not free, wild camping is prohibited and even cheap camp ground can easily cost $10 in more touristy areas.

As for budget, consider also visits to Museums, fun parks, additional places where you have to pay entrance. And of course you need to budget your potential bicycle problems. Trust me, whatever bicycle you choose, you need to maintain it. Bags can be broken for god knows what reason. I've been there, done that, bought the T-shirtt, if you understand what I mean.

However, a very basic budget with ONLY food and accommodation CAN be around US$10-20 a day. However, you will find that some days you will spend more. I remember the camp grounds in Italy, like Genoa, Rome and Florence where I paid US$25 a night for setting up my tent.

If you have more questions, feel free to ask.

Peter
