Luckily more and more hostels are introducing facilities for safely storing cycles, and some even allow guests to rent a bike for the duration of their stay. It’s not just bike-friendly locations such as Holland that are making it easier to cycle abroad on a budget – there are a whole host of destinations that are getting in on the act.

Green Tortoise Backpacker Guesthouse, San Francisco

This bike friendly hotel in San Francisco has found the perfect antidote to weary travelers trekking the city’s hilly streets – bike racks so guests can cycle to all the main sites! With a fun and friendly atmosphere, the Green Tortoise is in Little Italy, a district famous for its bookstores and as the home of the Beat Generation.

The hostel offers dozens of freebies, from a hearty breakfast and dinner, to Saunas and a whole host of entertainment, from Open-Mic nights to Pub Crawls. A large, turn-of-the-century ballroom has been transformed into a lounge, complete with foosball table and a piano, and the rooms are all clean and comfortable, each with their own private lockers for stashing your belongings.

The Dutch love to cycle, so it’s no surprise that many hostels provide storage facilities for cyclists. But this bicycle hotel does exactly as the name suggests – it allows guests to rent out bicycles during their stay for only €7.50 a day. The hostel is modern and funky inside, and run as environmentally friendly as possible, with paper and bottle recycling. There’s a free breakfast to fuel you up for day on the cobbled streets, and ample parking when you return home from sightseeing. There’s also the chance to hire carrier bikes for cycling with children.

But the hostel has been thoroughly updated and modernized –there’s an internet café and kitchen for preparing small meals, a spacious lounge, washing machines and a travel desk for organizing excursions.

The beautiful historic buildings are surrounded by parkland and gardens in the neighborhood of Avedørelejren, on the outskirts of the city. Best of all, the hostel offers bike rental, so guests can cycle into the city center. Siemreaprooms Guesthouse

SiemReapRooms Guesthouse

SiemReapRooms Guesthouse is located only 200 meters from the old market in Siem Reap in a quiet sidestreet. There are shared and private rooms (air conditioned and fan) available, ranging in price from US $6 to $15 (Superior private single room).

Cycling in Europe

Europe is a big place to cycle. Fortunately you can do it quite cheap by using campsites and cheap (youth) hostels.

Here's a brief selection of cycling stories in Europe

Add your own bicycle story

Cycling is a great experience. Nothing (to me at last) is better then being on the road and experience the country from the bicycle. The experience is more intense, you come closer to the locals and you see more.

What is YOUR bicycle story? Share it with us!

One Arm One Leg

Cycling is so easy, you don't need a license, no need to visit university, you don't even need two arms and two legs as one Chinese cyclist taught me
