A day full of slides

by Claire
(Yunnan)

Most memorable of our recent adventures will be the day we started with a rockslide in Tiger Leaping Gorge in Yunnan Province China. Poor Bob had to push Zippy, our fully loaded tandem, by himself, because he wanted me to film it. I certainly was no good at helping him because I was frozen with fear and refused to release my death grip on the bike as I locked my eyes on the raging river below. Getting through that should have been enough of an adventure, but it got worse. Approaching Lijiang and nearing 100 kilometers for the day, we hit a slick spot of wet clay and went down faster than you can yell "Tracks!" Coming out of my concussion-induced fog, I realized we'd better accept the ride to the hospital that the Chinese police were offering us. I've never wanted to find myself in a Chinese hospital and I sure didn't want to see our tandem hanging from the back of a pickup truck and tied in with one small piece of rope. Would we ever see our bike again? Find out at our website:

Tracks?
by: Bob Rogers

By tracks, she was referring to railroad tracks anywhere, when hit at a bad angle. None were involved. As you know Peter, anywhere in the mountains of China, the trucks carry tanks of water to drip on hot brakes, and the trucks all leak oil and brake fluid. Add some wet clay, and it's a lethal combo at the end of a hard day. I'm not sure of our exact route that day, I'll ask Claire to look it up in her journal. I remember we passed the big bend of the Yangtse, over a mountain, and down into a peach growing area not far out of Lijang when we crashed. Sorry it took me so long to find this!

Ahh... Lijiang and the Tiger Leaping Gorge. It's been a while since I was there.

One thing that stuck me... the tracks you mention. From where did you come? Qiaotou or Daju? I remember the road from Daju was pretty bad. But isn't that part of the fun AFTERWARDS? I have always thought that those kind of stories are great when you are in a comfortable room, sitting with a cup of coffee and tell them to others.
